Custom Reader Revisited
I received a comment from Quentin over at Custom Reader asking for a new review. I'm happy to oblige him.
So I just looked at their
website, and to my amazed disappointment there's no obvious link to
download a copy of custom reader from the front page. (-1) In fact
after LOOKING for five minutes I couldn't find it at all. I even looked
at "solutions and licenses†and I found description but no link to
the Binary. (-1)
Finally I decided to look down at the "Order form" link. Naturally I
didn't look there first, because I'm not ordering a customized version
of CR. But lo and behold there it is, nevermind, it’s just a signup
sheet to be contacted. (-1)
Ugh! it looks like adware and I don't want to download it for that
reason alone. (-10) But in "the interest of science" I'll do it. I
won't even bother to tally the score at this point but I'll provide a
full review as soon as I can figure out how to download it.
I finally searched for it on Google and tracked it down to download.com, that's completely ridiculous I might add. If you haven't figured it out I really hate the way I've had to look for this file.
Custom Reader Downloaded (finally) from
Download.com and installation began quickly. I was presented with two
viewing options (changeable in the program). The first was "Classic
browser view" and the second a new browser type. I chose classic and
then got the option to report or not report "feedrank" which helps to
rank the popularity of feeds. After considering that I generally hate
that kind of stuff I enabled it anyway just for the test to see what my
firewall would do with it.
Guess what? The next click told me an upgrade was available. (ARRGG!
why couldn't I start with the newest version? Oh, yeah that's right
because I COULDN'T FIND THE DOWNLOAD ON THIER SITE!)
With the upgrade and restart of the program out of the way, I fired it
back up and BANG! It started FAST. I mean really fast. I've been using bottomfeeder lately and I've grown accustomed to it's s-l-o-w startup.
On program launch it opened up with the feedtime home page
in the viewer. Clicking on "Reader's live manage panel" I discover this
is a demo version, with some features disabled. Oh, well it's their
loss for making it impossible to get a working download of the program.
I'll continue to check this out and report what I find.
Importing my OPML file from bottomfeeder
was impossible. I checked the file and all the data is there but only
one feed would import out of several dozen. So I re-exported an OPML
– still CR won't import my OPML, so Now I've got to go through the
hateful process of trying to craft all my feeds, or at least a workable
mix of them into CR so I can continue testing.
So I finally got some feeds loaded. Clicked on the link and started
trying to read. I click the title and nothing opens but the thread is
marked as read. I clicked some links in the stories, and again nothing
SO far I'm much less than impressed. I'll chalk it up as a failure of
the test version I got from download.com since I couldn't download it
from their website.
