Law: Circumcision of the Heart

Originally posted at http://gephartr.blogspot.com

Even from the beginning when the Law was given, it was the circumcision of the heart that marks the children of the LORD. From the teaching that I grew up understanding (know this is not necessarily the same as the teaching I was given), I understood the circumcision of the heart to be what came from Jesus after he lived. But this was as early as Sinia – and earlier.

So, even when the Law was given it was not given to impart righteousness and status as children of the LORD. So what is a large purpose of the Law?

Deu 10:12-21 (NASB)
“Now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require from you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways and love Him, and to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, {and} to keep the LORD’S commandments and His statutes which I am commanding you today for your good?

Behold, to the LORD your God belong heaven and the highest heavens, the earth and all that is in it. Yet on your fathers did the LORD set His affection to love them, and He chose their descendants after them, {even} you above all peoples, as {it is} this day.

So circumcise your heart, and stiffen your neck no longer. For the LORD your God is the God of gods and the Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God who does not show partiality nor take a bribe.

He executes justice for the orphan and the widow, and shows His love for the alien by giving him food and clothing. So show your love for the alien, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt.

You shall fear the LORD your God; you shall serve Him and cling to Him, and you shall swear by His name. He is your praise and He is your God, who has done these great and awesome things for you which your eyes have seen.”

Thus, the question asked was “what does the LORD your God require from you” or my question, “what is a large purpose of the Law?” These are in fact the same question…. And the answer?

1. to fear the LORD your God
2. to walk in all His ways and love Him
3. to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul
4. to keep the LORD’S commandments and His statutes which I am commanding you today
5. circumcise your heart, and stiffen your neck no longer
6. show your love for the alien by
     a. executing justice for the orphan and the widow
     b. giving him food and clothing
7. you shall fear the LORD your God
8. you shall serve Him and cling to Him
9. you shall swear by His name, YHWH

Thus, our Lord Jesus says “Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matt 5:17-19 NASB)
