Scene

(The Called is sitting in a church pew reading her bible. The Tempter keeps pushing her attention somewhere else. Beside her the phone rings over and over. Finally however, The Called reluctantly answers it while The Tempter grimaces and acts disappointed and angry.)

Called:…Hello? Hello? Excuse me? This is God? THE God? Wow.

Narrator: That’s how it all begins. God is calling and calling for us, but sometimes it takes us awhile to hear the phone. Some notice early in life…some later. Some need to see a burning bush or a blinding light. Others just need to see that their lives are going nowhere and the things they keep pushing aside as interruptions are really a ringing phone. God calling. God trying and trying and trying to get our attention.

Called:: Excuse me, God, I don’t mean to be rude, but why would YOU be calling ME? I mean, don’t you keep pretty busy with all the preachers and the pope and all? Are you sure this isn’t a wrong number? This is just me, here. Hey, are you calling collect?

(The Tempter is clearly agitated and tries to end the conversation by pointing out other interesting things.)

Called:: you want me to do what!? You want me to serve you? Sure, no problem. I’m already in church, I guess I go to the evening service too. How about I attend another bible study? I might even listen to David and sing louder or… oh, don’t sing louder… it’s that bad? I thought you said make a joyful noise? OH, it should be joyful to hear too huh? Well I am awfully busy but I can probably squeeze you in for something somewhere, what’ll it be? Hey, I can join the prayer chain… WHAT!

Narrator: God wants you to grow so he’s always going to take you a little further than your comfort zone. That’s never easy but it is what he wants from us.

(The Tempter is waving his hands and shaking his head no.)

Called:: listen no offense I think you’ve got the wrong person. I’m not a preacher, can’t even be one since I’m a girl… OH, well I’m not sure I want to do that … Oh, no. Thanks really. You know I’d love to obey you and all that but I… I… I’m not qualified!

(The Tempter is now silently cheering.)

Called:: What do you mean that’s the point? Oh that’s catchy. You don’t call the qualified you qualify The Called. Cute slogan. But God I don’t need a slogan, I need more training. What do you mean I’ve had enough training?

(Tempter is holding up a missions card)

Called:: (gives a thumbs up to The Tempter) Hey God, I really think you should give that assignment to someone who’s really holy like a missionary or a pastor.

(Tempter smiles and pats him on the back.)

Called:: (Shifts uncomfortably in her seat) – Oh, yeah. Paul was a blasphemer and Moses was a murder yeah I get it…. But they were… Oh, I see. But what about…? But, I’m too young for stuff like that! What’s that? obedience I guess.

(Tempter is jumping up and down doing everything to get The Called‘s attention. The Called is beginning to wave him off.)

Called:: Well I do want to obey you. Yes I do love you. But I’m afraid. I mean what if I really didn’t understand you?

(The Tempter is getting more and more wild trying to do anything to stop the conversation. The Called is waving him off more and more.)

Called:: Yes Father, I do understand. (cupping his hand over the phone The Called shouts at The Tempter) Go Away! In Jesus’ name just go away! (The Tempter recoils as if struck and limps away.)

Called:: Yes Father. I love you too. Oh yeah, I’m really sorry about that. Oooh and that one too. How can you ever forgive me for that?! (glancing at her bible and thumbing it’s pages) Yes I remember – thank you. Well I am still afraid but I’ll do it… only… God? Will you come with me? Ok then. (Smiling, The Called hoists her bible and still talking on the phone begins to walk out.) What do you want me to do . Yes. Uh huh. Ok. Sure. Mm, ok…..

Narrator: Are YOU going to answer the phone?
