Friedrich Wilhelm Krummacher

KRUMMACHER, FRIEDRICH WILHELM (1796-1868)

German Reformed pastor
Born at Moers near Dusseldorf, Krummacher studied theology at the Universities of Halle and Jena. In 1819 he became pastor of a Reformed church at Frankfurt. In 1823 he moved to a church at Ruhrort, in the Ruhr Valley. Two years later he went to Gemarke in Wuppertal.
Krummacher’s main pastoral success occurred in Elberfeld (Wuppertal), where he served a Reformed congregation from 1834 until 1847. Then he was called to Trinity Church in Berlin, where Schleiermacher had served as pastor from 1809 until his death in 1834. In 1853 Krummacher became chaplain to the royal court at Potsdam.
Krummacher took an active lead in the early years of the Evangelical Alliance. He was known as a powerful preacher and staunch opponent of rationalism. His most famous writing was Elijah the Tishbite (1826). W.A.Detzler
