The Parable of the Pending Kingdom

This entry is part 4 of 10 in the series The Gospel of Luke

This politician hasn’t paid his taxes – but wants to run for office. That politician cannot keep his vow to his wife but claims he’ll keep a promise to this country. Another politician has never made a real decision in their life but they believe they can succeed in office. One by one you can check them off the list by their repeated failures in the small things for if they cannot be trusted in the small things, who would be wise to trust them with the big things? In this political season (as in every day) it would be wise to clarify that what someone does in private has a great deal to do with their capacity in public. The word of God has much to say on the topics of Politics, business, and everyday life. And in this one principle of faithfulness it cries out to be heard in every arena. Most assuredly it applies to we who claim to be servants of Christ Jesus as we await his coming kingdom. It also speaks to those who reject Christ; and more directly it teaches us something about how the kingdom is about to be enacted, and it does so by referring to history which was very recent […]

The Bible Backbone Plan

A few years ago I ran into Professor Grant Horner’s 10 Chapter a day reading system. It was beautiful but in my mind a bit too much. I tried it several times and it always felt a bit too artificial to keep breaking on chapter boundaries in the middle of a story. (More on that at a later date perhaps.) I kept getting frustrated and eventually broke off the reading plan and just did it my way. As a result I developed my own Bible reading plan very similar to Prof Horner’s. I call it the Bible Backbone plan. It is a plan that works quite well for me, perhaps because it’s just a little smaller in size, and a thus a bit more flexible for my brain to work with. I’ve broken the scriptures down into six areas which I felt should be read every day. List 1: The Historical Backbone of Scripture tells the main story of the Bible from beginning to end. Read this looking for the overview of God’s plan Did you miss a day? Don’t panic, dwell in grace and read today. Genesis, Exodus, Numbers, Joshua, judges, 1 & 2 Samuel, 1&2 Kings, Ezra, Nehemiah, Luke, Acts, & Revelation. List 2: The Informational Books add […]

How Serious Is Your Faith?

The price of Christianity is high. Are you prepared to pay it? True, Jesus paid the price for our sins. But we have a price to pay for following Him. We don’t belong to this world, and the rest of the world knows it. Jesus told us as much. “Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.” (Matthew 16:24) The cross is not your very real burdens or aches and pains, the cross is your death sentence.  I frequently remember a critical moment in my coming to Christ when I realized I may, in fact, die for this.  That is the only rational view of every Christian – because that is exactly what Jesus said would happen (Matthew 24:9, Luke 21:17, John 15:18-21).  There is No Crown Without a Cross. Since that time I have believed that Martyrdom is a very real possibility for me, and for every single Christian. I believe that unless we weigh the cost of discipleship, we will be unprepared to follow it through. So again and again I am heartbroken and unsurprised when I read of the horrors our Brothers and Sisters face around the world. Take a look at these […]
