Truth.
Without it the world devolves into an amorphous chaos where everyone's preferences describe a personal reality disconnected from everyone else's. In that dark place no decision is good or bad, no action is right or wrong. But in the presence of truth - we are exposed for what we are. Therefore we need truth as the divine measuring rod of our identities.

The Historical Backbone of Scripture

EDIT: Updated reading PDF for 2013.

I like reading through my Bible every year. And since it is the turn of the year, I'm sure I'm not alone and many of you are selecting your plan or have done so. But I wonder if others have just determined that they'll struggle through the same old list and risk passing out in February when Leviticus hits. (Don't dis my favorite OT book, but I understand the problem.) So if anyone is looking for a Bible reading plan for the new year that's a little different, but still covers the Bible in a year I offer up my Historical Backbone of Scripture plan.

Last year I worked through a kludged replica of Prof. Grant Horner's reading plan.  I found it a bit daunting for my own style of devotions and soon felt like I was laboring to keep up rather than enjoying God's word. That is the wrong state of mind. So I set out to change that.

The Historical Backbone of Scripture

I scaled Prof. Horner's plan back quite a bit and built one I simply call "The Historical Backbone of Scripture."  The plan consists of six divisions; and for my purposes represents the 66 books of the protestant canon.

Why doesn't God act to stop mass shootings?

Over the past few weeks, I've seen a number of family & friends share on facebook photos, even videos, of joyous family times, putting up their Christmas tree. Christmas, as the song goes "it's the most wonderful time of the year". That has all changed in a most horrific way for family, friends, front-line responders and the community in general in Connecticut today with the school shooting tragedy. It has impacted not just that community, but individuals communities across America and around the world. One of the burning questions in all of this is where is God ? Why didn't he act to stop this violence ? Why doesn't he stop all violence?

In the lead up to Christmas some people have an advent Christmas calendar, where each day you open up a little door to reveal a treat, usually a sweet or chocolate. But for some Advent is much more that this, it's a Latin term that simply refers to the concept of 'coming', and is a time to reflect upon and prepare for the coming of Christ. For some faith traditions it is a time period on the church calendar in which you focus on specific scripture readings, for others faith traditions, it is a little less formal, and maybe not even considered a tradition as such, and may be a time where some choose to reflect on the Christmas story in their personal time with God as they read the scriptures in the lead up to Christmas.
