The Source of Truth

Truth.

Without it the world devolves into an amorphous chaos where everyone's preferences describe a personal reality disconnected from everyone else's. In that dark place no decision is good or bad, no action is right or wrong.
But in the presence of truth - we are exposed for what we are.
Therefore we need truth as the divine measuring rod of our identities.
" I am the truth" - Jesus The Christ.(John 14:6)

I Unapologetically Believe That The Bible is Truth. Without a definite source of truth, we end up in a quagmire of irresponsible erudition leading to nowhere. Introduce a defined truth into a discussion however and everything relating to that revealed truth is either in line with it (True) or out of sync (False).
"Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth." (John 17:17 NASB95)

We Thank God for his Word.

We Thank God for his Word. The Bible trumps them all.

I'm sure you have already

I'm sure you have already seen it, but eBible.com is a pretty cool filter/search for The Word.
Thanks for your site~

(1) So, do you NOT

(1) So, do you NOT unapologetically believe Jesus when he said, "I am the Truthi" ? Because your site says in places that the is only ONE truth.
(2) So which is it? Jesus? or The Bible?
(3) Or does Truth mean two different things in each of these cases?
(4) If so, what good is a 'definite source of truth' if you can keep changing your meaning of 'Truth' ?

I'm Not a Philosopher

tcblack's picture

hmmm.... Apparently it's time for an update here. I wrote that little diddy in about three minutes one day without trying to make it philosopher proof. I really don't think anyone who is not looking to pick a fight could mistake the meaning. I'm not interested in sparring over the clear meaning of words.

1. Jesus is THE embodiment of truth; which is to say he is the origin of all things and there is no falseness in him. The Bible is truth; which is to say that it is not false in any way. Everything the bible says is truth. There is indeed only one truth. What the Bible has to say does not in any way contradict Jesus - in fact the Bible from beginning to end is story, prophecies, poetry and more regarding Jesus as the only mediator between God and men (including demonstrating our clear need of a mediator and redeemer).

2. Yes. Jesus is the truth, and the Bible is true.

3. Nope. One truth. Jesus is the truth, the Bible is the truth. Or haven't you read (John 17:2) "Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth." My statement is actually taken (paraphrased) right from the Bible itself.

4. The definite source of truth is God's word. Since it comes from God and Jesus is God it is truth. Neither Jesus nor the Bible will contradict the other.

The meaning is clear; there is one truth my friend. You are looking for controversy where none resides. Read the entire thing, comprehend it's clear meaning and don't allow yourself to needlessly quibble about words. Such a practice only ruins those listening. (2 Timothy 2:14)

Two truths in this case = 1 truth

I believe your question is as follows:

If I quote Jesus as saying, "I am the truth"
And if I next say that the Bible is 'truth' then why is this not a contradiction?

Well, first of all the Bible which is 'truth' is the source of this quote.
No I'm not playing word games here - stick with me.......

In the Gospel of John (chapter 1) we see that the Word was God and was with God.
The Bible also informs us that Jesus is God (a person of the trinity)
Therefore since Jesus is the word, we have no contradiction.
Jesus and the Word being one and the same.

Another example:
At God's command (His word) he created all things and since John 1:3 in referring to Christ says that all things were created through him and by him then it is clear that Jesus is the living word.

So to answer your question: "Which is it? Jesus? or The Bible?"
The answer is YES

The "Simple" Truth

Truthi, from a Biblical perspective, is simply God's message to man. It is without error, without question, and delivered with consistency, love and, dare I say, truth.

Jesus was God the Father's living and breathing message to man. Jesus didn't just speak it, he lived it. The words that make up God's Word (the Bible) are also the truth. (It both amuses me and saddens me that you can quote a verse about Jesus being the truth from a source that you can't acknowledge is also completely true and accurate in message and motive, otherwise the quote itself would be in question.)

When you come to first be open to, then move to accepting and understanding and then finally to embracing and celebrating the reality of what TRUTH truly is from a foundational Biblical perspective AND where it comes from - from God through His Son, His Word and His Spirit (according to Jesus in John 14:17) - you can begin enjoying it and living it instead of questioning it or arguing about it. If you are truly a follower of the Truth you advocate, you will know without any doubt that is His clear and only desire for us all.

truth

'Truthi' is and shall be that which you believe to be true with the value being placed where you stand as to your knowledge your wisdom and your understanding. jaggedlegsix@yahoo.com
There are 2 truths. True truth and il-advised truth. True truth shall set you free il-advised truth is what else??? a lie.
GO FIGURE [ ONE=THREE ]

I've read this six times and

I've read this six times and I still can't figure out what you're trying to say.

If you're claiming that there is no such thing as absolute truth than I have to ask... Is that true? If it is than you categorically have defined an absolute truth thus nullifying the statement.

If you're saying that an individual's perception of truth might be true to them but false in reality than I would agree. This is why we have so many people in the world claiming they are right. That alone is another reason why we desperately need a primary source of truth (the Bible).

truth as one equals three

***amen. the Bible is truth but read by the non-believer it does not become truth to they who see until the reader is born again then the truth is revealed screened by the almighty God the constant of one is as well the fatherhood the spirited and the son Jesus Christ.

the truth is Allah the God

the truth is Allah the God of all of mankind your Lord and mine now how can Esa (Jesus) peace and blessings be upon him be God?Why would God kill himself or His so called "son" for the sinns of mankind where is the jusitce in this??This is illogical belief is logical!

Allah is no god

tcblack's picture

Allah - the Arabic word for god does not in it's current usage refer to the one true God but to a made up god. The Allah of Islami is not God.

now how can Esa (Jesus)...be God?

Jesus is indeed the son of God; bearing the fullness of the diety. So that we can indeed say that Jesus is God. There are many resources around the internet regarding the deity of Christ, including several very good ones here.

Why would God kill himself or His so called "son" for the sinns of mankind where is the jusitce in this??

God would kill his son because my friend, you and I both have sinned. God will not permit sinful people to be brought near his perfection. Neither can he ignore the sin but must punish it. Yet God loves mankind his special creation and wishes for us to be near him. It is impossible however for any mere man to die in the place of another man - he must die for his own sin. For redemption to happen, God himself had to become a man in order to become a sufficient sacrifice for the sin of every person. Only God could endure the eternity of hell for every person, in a mere six hours upon the cross. Christians rely exclusively upon the grace of that God, the one who sent his son to take our own place of death so that we in turn could receive his life!

The word of God is clear on the matter of sin and justice. Sin demands the death penalty. God became man so that he could be just in delivering that death penalty and also that he might be the justifier in receiving that death penalty on our behalf. God has made Jesus both LORD and Christ so that everyone who receives him as their savior and believes in in him might pass from the death sentence to the promise of eternal life.

Truth, are you really sure?

Um, the Bible is definitively NOT truth (either literally, p or amorphously!) it is a collection of 'stories' some purely made up, and some containing half-truths or references to true historical events. As a reference of 'truth' it is no more worthy than a Hollywood movie based on a novel.

Critical analysis and plain common sense are the only paths to 'truth'.

Besides, which version of the Bible is true? Surely they can't all be?

The Burden of Proof

tcblack's picture

There are two possibilities behind your comment here.

A) you are on a quest for truth and are interested in a dialogue to help discern if the Bible is defensible. You have not left a name, you make summary statements without question and thus I do not believe you are interested in dialog. That leaves option B) You were clicking by on the internet and saw the site and promptly decided to fire a drive by comment which you will likely never come back to read and by which you can smugly assume you have bested the most successful book in all of history with a few snide lines.

It's possible that I'm mistaken in my estimation but I doubt it. So my answer will be a bit curt in spots since my assumption is that you won't read it anyway.

The burden of proof I'm afraid lies in your court.
Demonstrably prove that it is a collection of stories. Your statements lack not only basis but capacity to withstand scrutiny - something the Bible has withstood for thousands of years.

As for critical analysis and plain common sense being the only path to truth, by which standard will the common sense be weighed? Yours? I dare say that your common sense has already demonstrated itself as less than capable of withstanding scrutiny. Therefore another source of common sense must be found. And what about when multiple streams of common sense find themselves in conflict who or what will be your final decision. You need a single definitive source of truth and lack it. Perhaps you should take your own advise and come at the Bible with critical reasoning. It will not be harmed by the attempt but if you're an honest scholar you will not be able to walk away unscathed.

As for the trustworthiness of the Bible I have already stated that it has withstood the toughest scrutiny for thousands of years. Dig deep and check every fact. You will not find it wanting. I dare you to study the works of men like C.S. Lewis or Lee Strobel who began their study with the sole intent to destroy the Bible and Christianity. Both men soon saw that the Bible is quite defensible. They serve as only two examples of honest scholars who were willing to be transformed by what they studied. In other words they were, unlike you, not merely interested in a drive by potshot but were instead searching for truth - whatever it may be.

Which version? I'll give you a hint it's not English. :-) Translations are what they are. Anyone with a hint of education will be able to comprehend that moving from one language to another requires compromise at worst or requires extensive explanation at best. By and large however the massive translation project of the Bible has been performed for the most part by the world's most competent scholars and their work is demonstrably sound. In your simple little jab you insinuate that there is great diversity in the meaning or reading of various versions - you are sadly mistaken.

As for translations I prefer the NASB and have grown rather fond of the ESV. But I believe the Greeki New Testament and the Hebrewi Old testament will be more accurate since they are copies of copies of copies and so forth of the originals. Modern critical versions like the NA27/UBS4 are remarkably well documented and provide us with more than reasonable assurance of their accuracy.

Now then this little response has grown farther than it should have especially since I do not anticipate you care enough about truth to read it. Prove me wrong.
