Series: My Transition from an iPhone to Android

my experiences of transitioning from an iPhone to Android. I’ll touch on the background events that led to my switching to an Android phone

My Transition from an iPhone to Android: Part 1-Purchase Experience

This entry is part 1 of 4 in the series My Transition from an iPhone to Android

This entry is part 1 of 4 in the series My Transition from an iPhone to AndroidAuthor’s Note: I’ve gone back to the iPhone and switched to T-Mobile. Check out a new series of posts coming up! About two weeks ago, I did what was, for me, the unthinkable. I parted ways with my iPhone 4 and switched to an Android phone (Samsung Galaxy Note II to be exact). What makes it a shocker to me is the fact that the iPhone was the only smartphone (and cell phone for that matter) I ever owned. Unlike those who in the past used Blackberrys or Windows Mobile phones or even some other form of phone before the iPhone, I’ve been a “one phone person” my entire life, and my phone of choice has always been the iPhone. And rightly so. Everyone knows me as a die hard Apple fan, using Macs since early 2006 (and waiting to switch to a Mac even before then). I switched to the Mac at a time before Macs became popular (and people thought I was crazy to switch to a Mac), so it obviously made sense to be an iPhone user as well. Apple and I have had a solid bond for years. One could […]

My Transition from an iPhone to Android: Part 2-The Hardware

This entry is part 2 of 4 in the series My Transition from an iPhone to Android

This entry is part 2 of 4 in the series My Transition from an iPhone to AndroidAuthor’s Note: I’ve gone back to the iPhone and switched to T-Mobile. Check out a new series of posts coming up! In Part 1 of my series on why I switched from an iPhone to Android (Samsung Galaxy Note II to be exact), I explained the background to why I made the switch, as well as my general purchasing experience purchasing the Note II at my local Sam’s Club. In Part 2, I want to focus on a solid review of the Samsung Galaxy Note II’s hardware, why I chose it as my phone of choice, as well as how well it stacks up against the iPhone and other popular Android phones on the market. Screen The first thing one will notice and admire about the Galaxy Note II is its massive screen. Dubbed a “phablet”, the Note II is a hybrid of a smartphone and a tablet. Packed with 5.5” AMOLED screen running 720p HD resolution, the Note II’s screen is absolutely stunning. One of the biggest factors I was looking for in a smartphone was the ability to heavily read on the go, without having to carry around both a smartphone and […]

My Transition from an iPhone to Android: Part 3-Android OS

This entry is part 3 of 4 in the series My Transition from an iPhone to Android

This entry is part 3 of 4 in the series My Transition from an iPhone to AndroidAuthor’s Note: I’ve gone back to the iPhone and switched to T-Mobile. Check out a new series of posts coming up! In Part 1 of my series on transitioning from an iPhone to Android, I gave the background on why I made the transition, as well as my general purchase experience on switching to the Samsung Galaxy Note II (the Android phone I ended up switching to). In Part 2, I gave an in-depth review of the Galaxy Note II’s hardware, comparing it to both my iPhone 4, the iPhone 5, as well as other popular Android smartphones (the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the HTC One). In Part 3 of this series, I want to touch on the heart of switching to an Android phone, the Android OS (Operating System) itself. Jelly Bean and TouchWiz The Samsung Galaxy Note II currently ships with the Jelly Bean (4.1) release of Android OS, masked behind Samsung’s TouchWiz interface (versus stock Android). Jelly Bean seems like a solid Android release for a person like myself to switch into, and all in all, it feels pretty stable. I’ve had a couple of minor app crashes since switching, but […]
